In general there are only two signal types which run through DVI connectors – digital and analogue. These are not compatible with each other.
Now here is where it gets a little tricky – There are generally two different types of DVI connectors – DVI-I and DVI-D. The difference between DVI-I and DVI-D is the PIN layout and the signals in which they support.
DVI-I has more pins and can send out an analog and digital signal where as DVI-D has less pins and can only send out a digital signal.

So which is right for you?

In general – newer hardware is only made to support DVI-D, so as a good rule of thumb – if its a new product then its a good indicator that a DVI-D adapter is required. As with any rule – there are always exceptions, so to be 100% sure – please check the manufacturers spec sheet for your product to see whether a DVI-I or DVI-D adapter is required.
